Effectiveness of Aluminum Anodes for CP in Low Chloride Environment

Luciano Lazzari Sr., Fabio Bolzoni, and Grabriela Contreras, Politecnico di Milano; Elmer Perez, Politecnico Di Milano; Alessandro Benedetti Sr., CNR

Aluminium-based alloys are widely used in sea water as galvanic anodes. Conversely, their use in low chloride containing environment (i.e. soil, Caspian or Baltic sea) s not recommended because aluminium anodes tend to passivate. Results on the effectiveness of aluminium galvanic anodes in solutions with different chloride and sulphate content are presented and discussed as regard anode working potential, current output and efficiency. For comparison purpose, also zinc alloy anode was tested.
