Real-Time, Online Corrosion Monitoring & Process Optimization Through the Chemical Plant Control System

Russell D. Kane, iCorrosion LLC; Juan Hernandez, Honeywell Process Solutions; Keith F. Briegel, Rohm & Haas

This paper describes online corrosion monitoring of two nominally identical chemical units were showing widely different signs of corrosion damage.  Using the plant distributed control system process operators and engineers were able to identify process scenarios that were contributing to the difference in corrosion rates. By devising a new operating strategy, corrosion in the second unit was avoided without a costly material upgrade.
