Organic acids are typically used in oilfield production as scale dissolvers and are also injected into oil bearing formations to stimulate hydrocarbon production. However, as these acids are highly corrosive, corrosion inhibitors are normally added to these acids to minimise corrosion.  A corrosion inhibitor package has been developed that when added to formic acid based scale dissolvers, greatly minimises the corrosivity of the product against a variety of metals at temperatures up to 180°C.  In addition, the corrosion inhibitor package is environmentally friendly. Under UK CEFAS regulations, the corrosion inhibitor package is classified as “Gold” and does not have a substitution warning.
