Close-interval surveys at pipeline crossings can produce interrupted potential profiles that are misleading. This will be shown with field data and laboratory experiments to show the factors that affect the accuracy of the surface pipe to soil potential measurements.  These would include coating quality, presence of coating defects, orientation of pipelines and geometry of the crossings.
