Soluble Salt Testing: An Integrated Extract & Analyze Strip
Dr. Paul D. Gossen, J. E. Yates, and G. Peete-Fletcher, National Surface Treatment Center

Salt contamination is pervasive in marine coating because of the salt water service of vessels and the proximity of coating application work to salt water. Painting over salt causes premature coating failure; so, specifications for salt contamination on substrates are increasingly common. Traditional field test kits are slow, cumbersome and imprecise. This paper presents a single-use test strip that integrates a flexible, engineered extraction process with an onboard conductivity sensor. Field and laboratory data demonstrate the equivalence of this platform to ISO 8502-9.
