| Dehumidification Benefits in Storage and Warehouse Facilities | ||
| Brian Rappold, Larry Carlson, and Mike Carr, Therma-Stor, LLC Background: Current climate control practices in storage and warehouse facilities typically utilize air conditioning systems. If the storage facility is relatively cool or very close to the outside (heat load) temperature the cooling of the facility air can actually raise the relative humidity. If the temperature of the facility is cooled below the dewpoint of the outside air with an air-conditioner condensation may occur on cold surfaces, such as concrete floors. This will mean the use of an air-conditioner can actually cause damage to a facility and its contents by lowering the air’s ability to hold moisture through over cooling. A dedicated dehumidifier system is much more efficient and if chosen correctly can pay for itself is a short period of time in not only operating costs, but in desired results. Results: The desired result is the proper dew point and relative humidity needed for what is stored in the storage facility and the storage facility itself. Dependent on multiple factors, dehumidifiers have been proven to provide the best overall answer to climate controlling a space. Conclusion: Facilities need to be individually evaluated based on climatology and contents to see what equipment provides the best opportunity to achieve desired results. In all cases where moisture can cause problems, dehumidification products provide the best potential for climate controlling the space. | ||
