The paper provides technical considerations and perspective in the development of recently published NACE standard test method TM 0208-2008 for rapid qualitative evaluation to determine Vapor Inhibiting Ability (VIA) for temporary protection of ferrous metals (VIA-F). The perspective on the method includes resolution among alternatives for improving repeatability and validity of outcomes, and for rating and reporting results. The paper also provides a framework for initial work toward creating one or more VIA test methods for corrosion protection of non-ferrous metals (VIA-NF), including consideration of benchmark metal specimens and related possibilities for rapid qualitative tests.
