The Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center conducted a Research and Development Task funded by the Office of Naval Research under the Total Ownership Cost Reduction Future Naval Capability Program for the United States Marine Corps (USMC) aimed at reducing corrosion of combat and tactical equipment and associated maintenance burdens. The program to develop improvements to USMC acquisition specifications related to corrosion control was directed towards developing a performance specification for coatings to be used with USMC tactical vehicles and attempted to correlate accelerated corrosion tests to marine atmosphere exposure and current in-service materials performance. This paper reviews the tests, methodologies, and protocols used to develop a performance specification for coatings on Marine Corps vehicles.
