Dr. Bryan Koene and Mr. Marc Hirsch, Luna Innovations
Luna Innovations Incorporated has developed a coating with enhanced corrosion protection for radar components while maintaining necessary dielectric properties. The new coating consists of a water-based polyurethane dispersion (PUD) with very low volatile organic compound (VOC) content. In confined areas, application of the low-VOC coating improves worker safety over incumbent technologies and its rapid dry allows for shorter down time and faster return for equipment utilization. In addition, the low volatiles reduce the environmental impact related to emissions leading to air pollution, and reduced environmental impact of waste disposal. The enabling technology for the coating is the addition of a nonchromate corrosion inhibitor specifically designed for high strength aluminum substrates. The coating service life is expected to be twice that of current coating technologies resulting in significant cost savings in part maintenance and replacement. The low VOC, nonchromate coating technology will find application in the protection of military and commercial assets requiring good corrosion protection and dielectric properties, particularly where ambient curing and the use of standard application equipment is desired.
