Due to the lack of HVLP spray application facilities in the field and the current operations tempo, military aircraft with damaged coatings systems are left un-repaired. This leaves the aircraft exposed to the environment without critical coating layers that impart corrosion protection to the aircraft. In addition, when coating repairs are made, the length of time required for the coating to be “dry-to-fly”, often three days, interferes with the operational tempo. A review of rapid curing field friendly (i.e., brush, roller, and aerosol) coating formulations which are intended to meet MIL-SPEC performance qualifications will be presented that were developed under an OSD sponsored project.
