As shipping and other offshore assets continue to age, the risks of corrosion-related failures will increase. These increased risks will have negative consequences on not only reliability but also the possibility of catastrophic failures, both of which will have negative cost implications for owners and operators. Though risk-based maintenance and optimization has been developed and successfully utilized in a wide range of industries, its widespread adoption and use in the maritime industry has been slow to develop. The present work will describe how such a program can be developed and implemented and the benefits highlighted.
