In traditional life prediction of assets, the corrosion scientist is usually given a well known set of environmental conditions, based on which life prediction is established for well known corrosion mechanism(s). In the oil and gas industry, the picture is far more challenging at various stages. This paper is presented in two parts, separating general/localized corrosion from corrosion cracking predictions. Discussions include but are not limited to understanding and predicting changes of environmental parameters, accounting for such changes in the predictions, selecting the appropriate prediction tools, accommodating changes in production scenarios as well as corrosion mechanisms during the life cycles of short and long lived production systems.
