The size, mineralogy and morphology of iron corrosion products on carbon steel and cast iron surfaces from treated and untreated waters were examined. In all cases tubercles were made up of a surface layer, shell and core with the same general distribution of iron minerals. The structure of the tubercles from the varying locations was remarkably similar, suggesting that formation is controlled by something other than water quality.
